Why We Love These Tires
If you follow tires, then you know that the Falken AT3W tires have been at the top of the all terrain tire list for quite sometime. They have great tread wear, handle snow and ice extremely well and get you wherever your adventures take you.
Now, Falken is raising the bar and they have come out with the Wildpeak AT4W. Since these are fairly new tires as of this article, there are not a lot of real world driving review on them yet. So what has changed from the AT3W?
- A bit more expensive.
- Longer tread life by 10,000 miles.
- Higher load rating.
- Lower speed rating.
- 4 ply sidewall instead of 3.
- Heavier and beefier.
- Less road noise.
- More aggressive tread pattern.
- Slightly less snow and ice performance.
Features
- All terrain, all weather tire.
- Black sidewalls. One side has much more pronounced lettering raised from the sidewall. I chose the raised lettering facing out on my tires (see photos)
- Three peak mountain snowflake for extreme winter weather.
- Full depth sipes and grooves for excellent wet conditions traction for the life of the tire.
- 65,000 miles limited tread life warranty. 60,000 on LT tires.
- Staggered shoulder blocks.
- 3-ply Duraspec sidewall technology.
- – If you have black rims maybe throw on some black lug nut covers for a nice look.
Real World Use
Our stock Nexes tires that came with our Promaster had no business going off-road or in harsh snowy conditions. So, with only 7,000 miles on them, we sold them and upgraded to the Falken Wildpeak AT4W tires.
Let me just say, it was the perfect decision. The next day we headed up to Lake Tahoe California where they had a snow storm blowing in while we would be there.
On the drive up, the first thing I noticed was a bit of increased road noise. It was not enough to bother us and Marla actually didn’t even notice it until I mentioned it to her.
The interesting thing was that the noise almost completely diminished at speeds between 55 and 70 mph. So the noise issue turned out to not be an issue at all for us.
The road feel was great. It drove, steered and cornered without any issues. So far they feel super solid on and off road. Looking forward to taking them on many more off the beaten path adventures.
As we entered the snow covered campground, the road was lightly plowed but still covered with snow and ice. We headed in with no problem. The tires provided great traction. As we drove in we noticed that all of the vehicles camping there were four wheel drive. Maybe this was a sign, or maybe it was a challenge.
The next morning we awoke to 10 inches of fresh snow. As the morning went on we saw a couple of the four wheel drive Sprinter vans drive out through the fresh snow. I was a bit concerned, but hoped the new tires would give us the traction we needed.
When it came time to leave I cautiously stepped on the gas. The van crunched through the snow without any slipping or hesitation. As we headed out I could feel the rear axel hitting and dragging through the snow. One of the downfalls of the Promaster is the low rear axel.
The tires had no problem getting our fully loaded van through the 10 inches of fresh snow that blanketed the campground. Later, going over the pass, we had to put on our Peerless chains you see in the picture below. The tire and chain combo worked amazingly well!
Our Conclusion
Well, in a sentence, we couldn’t be happier with these tires. They look great, ride comfortably, add minimal noise and give great traction and control in snow, ice and dirt. Hopefully we will get a chance to get them muddy soon too.

Did you drive with these tires in extremely cold weather? I have the Falken Wildpeak AT3`s and I have noticed that in extremely cold weather the tires freeze with flat spots. Then while driving down the road the tires would cause vibration in the vehicle. Did you have this issue. Also I do know of one other person that also has this vibration issue with the same AT3 tires.
Hi, yes we drove in the snow quite a bit and did not notice any rough ride from flat spots. After about 10 miles we put on chains and drove another 90 minutes at slow speeds. they worked great. Our temps only got down to the mid 20’s. How low were your temps? The 4’s have beefier side walls so maybe that prevented the flattening.
