Riverside Campground & Cabins, Big Sur California

A SMALL PRIVATELY OWNED RIVERFRONT CAMPGROUND

Exploring Campgrounds On Our Bikes

We were staying at the Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park Campground for a few days and decided to get out on our bikes and explore the area. We rode north on highway 1 a little less than a half mile and decided to do a mini campground review.

We came across the Riverside Campground and Cabins and decided to head down their driveway and check it out. The campground was a bit of a ghost town and we were not really sure if they were open. We didn’t see anybody camping and there wasn’t anybody in the office.

It is definitely a small campground compared to the many that we have stayed at, and the sites are fairly close together. On the positive side, the campground is right on the river and has beautiful redwood trees throughout.

Most of the Big Sur area has very minimal cell service. If you need good reliable WiFi you can head over to the Big Sur Library. They are closed Sunday through Tuesday, but their no password WiFi is accessible from outside the building.

Types Of Campsites

  • 12 RV sites up to 34 feet.
  • Tent sites.
  • Cabins.

Our Campsite Pick

After a short two minute ride around the campground, yes it is that small, we decided that site number 15 would be our top choice. The site is at the end of the road and you don’t have anybody immediately next to you. You are also right on the river. Take a look at the campground map.

It didn’t look like an easy entrance into the river from the site though. It may be worth a second visit in the summer when there are people actually camping there to see how people interact in the space.

Local Things To See And Do

  • Preiffer Beach is 3/4 mile south and then down a 2 mile road, but no access for bikes, pedestrians or RV’s of any type unfortunately. We learned that the hard way after riding our bikes out there and being sent back.
  • The Pfeiffer State Park day use area offers many hiking trails for all abilities. We suggest the Valley View or Pfeiffer Falls hike.
  • Less than 1/4 mile north is the tiny town of Big Sur which has a few great restaurants. We had a great lunch at the Big Sur River Inn. In the summer they put chairs in the river and bring your food to you.

Cell Service

  • ATT – 1 bar.
  • Verizon – 1 bar.
  • If you need WiFi just head down to the Big Sur library. They are closed Sunday through Tuesday, but you can access their free WiFi from outside the building with no password.
