Van Parts Warehouse Molle Panels

Take a look at the bottom half of your van’s rear doors. You probably have a wood panel, cheap factory panel that came with your van or just bare metal. What if you could utilize this area to store items that you have stuffed in any of the many cubbies your van has.

Do you want an instant hot water heater but you’re not sure where to put it? Could you use additional storage bags for tools, flashlights or a first aid kit? Do you have hoses and power cords you wish you could hang somewhere out of the way?

Well, if you own a Sprinter or a Promaster, the Van Parts Warehouse has you covered. Their custom made MOLLE panels fit the exact contours and hole patterns of your van’s rear doors.

What Are They

Well lets first look at the acronym. MOLLE = Modular Lightweight Load-carrying Equipment. That alone gives you a pretty good clue. It is a storage system that was originally used by the military to mount equipment, knives, ammunition bags, weapons and other gear that could be attached to backpacks and tactical vests.

MOLLE panels can be made of nylon straps attached to backpacks or steel or aluminum which can be attached to almost any surface. For this review we are focusing on aluminum MOLLE panels attached to the rear doors of a van.

Let’s look at the features of the Van Parts Warehouse MOLLE panels

Installation

This was a really fun project, but you will need a few tools to complete it. You will need a tool set for removing panels from the van interior. This will come in handy if you ever decide to install some Havelock Wool in your walls. This kit has what you need and will make it much easier to remove the panels from the doors without damaging the fasteners. Tresalto Auto Trim Removal Tool Kit. You will also need a RivNut tool. This is the one I used Astro Pneumatic Tool 1442 13″ Hand Rivet Nut Setter Kit.

Step 1
Remove the rear door panels using the auto trim removal tool that fits your fasteners.
Step 2
Remove any insulation you have in the doors. This makes drilling the holes much easier and you don’t want the drill bit to get wound up in the insulation.
Step 3
Using the provided drill bit, drill out each of the holes where the door panel fasteners were. Make sure to put a drill stop on your bit or use a piece of wood so that you don’t accidentally drill through the exterior sheetmetal. That would surely ruin your day!
Step 4
Vacuum out the metal shavings from the inside of the door.
Step 5
Mask off your door and paint the bare metal of the drill holes with Rust-Oleum paint.
Step 6
Time to insert the RivNuts. *I suggest practicing with one or two on a scrap piece of metal to get the hang of it. If you have never used a RivNut tool before I highly recommend that you thoroughly read the instructions.
After the paint is dry, put a RivNut into each hole you drilled. Make sure they are secure. The RivNut should not feel loose at all. If it is, you can tighten a bit more with the tool.
Step 7
Reinstall whatever insulation you removed in step 2.
Step 8
Time to put the Molle panel on. Apply in this order. Original door panel, washer, nylon spacer, washer, molle panel, washer. Run the bolt through them and screw in finger tight.
Step 9
Once you have all the bolts in, tighten them down. Repeat on the second door and you are ready to use your molle panels for additional storage.

Our Conclusion

We are now huge fans of MOLLE panels and especially the van mart warehouse MOLLE panels. Having them custom made to fit my Promaster made this job a breeze. Hopefully they will make them for the upper parts of the doors like they do for the Sprinters. Sprinters get all the fun stuff.

The MOLLE panels have been on a few trip with us so far and they are great. They freed up space under my dinette seats for more items that are not needed on a regular basis. We highly recommend these if you wants more storage options. Plus we thing they look really cool!
