Skeggs Point...More Than Just A Place To Park
So How Did I End Up Here?
Well, one night when I was working a four day stretch of 10 hour shifts, I decided to get out of my employers parking lot and look for a better spot for the night. I checked the iOverlander app and saw there was a spot up on Skyline Boulevard just 20 minutes from work.
The reviews said there were signs stating you could park there for 8 hours and there were no signs prohibiting overnight parking. Having lived in this area most of my life, I was familiar with this area. It is on the mountain ridge that separate the bay area from the coast.
Off I went to see what this place was all about. When I arrived there were 3 cars in the parking lot, but by 9pm I had the whole place to myself. The sheriffs patrol this road all the time as it is a favorite spot for motorcycles and high performance cars. I knew if this was a place people would get “The Knock” that there wouldn’t be such good reviews on iOverlander.
My Night In The Van
I was there on a Monday night so I feel like my experience would be different had I been there on a Friday or Saturday night. There was very little traffic on the road. I may have had 10 cars pass by prior to me going to sleep.
As I said previously, I was the only one there after 9pm. By 9:30pm I was ready for bed. I slept through to my alarm which rudely went off at 5:30 am. It was a very peaceful sleep. When I got ready to leave, I was still the only vehicle in the parking lot.
It passed the test! No Knock.
What Does This Location Have To Offer?
At 2,300 feet above sea level, it offers great views of the bay area once you get past the trees that line the road and parking lot.
There are numerous trails for hiking and mountain biking on either side of Skyline Boulevard. You can actually take your mountain bike all the way to the coast from these trails. Skyline is also a very popular location for road cycling as well. There are great climbs up to the top from the town of Woodside. This parking lot fills up quickly with exercise enthusiasts on the weekends though so get there early to claim your parking spot.
If you head north on Skyline you will T into highway 92 which will take you to the beach town of Half Moon Bay. If you head South on Skyline you can grab a bite to eat at Alice’s Restaraunt. A popular spot for cyclist, motocyclists and car buffs.
Will I Be Back?
Yes I will, but I think next time I will stay for some cycling or hiking in the morning. This is a beautiful area and I hope you will visit and let us know what you think. If you like to be near the ocean, check out this boondocking review in Half Moon Bay.
Let's Keep It Clean
As with any great location, let’s remember to pack out what we pack in. Also, it never hurts to pick up other people’s trash so the locals don’t complain. With van life growing so rapidly, we really need to be conscious of the footprints we leave behind. Safe travels.
* Always check local laws to make sure overnight parking is allowed where you boondock. Check iOverlander for updates on this location.
