Here's Hoping You Never Need Them, But If You Do, Choose Rhino USA

Building A Recovery Tool Chest

Well, in my previous articles we have already covered Go Treads recovery boards and a RHINO USA foldable shovel to our recovery tool kit. What happens though if we dig out our stuck wheels, place the Go Treads under them, and we still can’t get out? Well, then it’s time to get towed out by another vehicle. Hopefully that vehicle is not a tow truck that is going to charge you some serious cash!

There are a lot of options of different types of ropes, hooks and shackles to get you out. Since I have thankfully never been stuck, I chose items that I have seen used in recovery situations online.  One of my favorite You Tube channels is Matt’s Off Road Recovery. He and his team know all the tricks to get vehicles unstuck from some pretty incredible situations.

Let’s take a look at some of the equipment options you have for getting pulled out and then I will focus on the ones I chose.

Types Of Recovery Tools

There are a few different types of ropes, straps and shackles besides the ones I am reviewing. Let’s take a look at a few of your options.

  • Kinetic Recovery Ropes – Also know as a snatch rope, they are designed to stretch and transfer the kinetic energy built up from the recovery vehicle and transfer it to the stuck vehicle. Think of it as a bungee cord that snaps you out like a rubber band.
  • Hitch Receiver Recovery Point – If you have a secure frame mounted hitch, this device slides into the hitch providing a D ring to attach the rope to.
  • Soft Rope Shackles – As reviewed in this article, they are made of rope which is far less dangerous should there be an equipment failure under tension. They are also easy to use and gentler on the vehicle than hooks.
  • Metal Recovery Shackles – You will often see these on the front bumpers of off road vehicles. They are secured metal attachment points for soft shackles or hooks to attach to.

How To Use Them

Haha well I am not an off road recovery expert so I will leave this to your own You Tube research, but let’s take a look at the basics.  Recovering any vehicle on the side of a road or trail can be extremely dangerous so do your research.

  1.  Make sure your recovery strap is rated for what you are trying to accomplish. Ropes and straps have a limit as to how much they can pull. Always use equipment that far exceeds the weight of what you are pulling.
  2.  Always stand clear of the sides and in between the vehicles in case a rope, shackle or recovery point fails.
  3.  Use a weighted “blanket” of some sort on top of the strap. If the strap fails this will bring it to the ground instead of launching toward the vehicle.
  4. The recovery vehicle should not pull in reverse as this is the weakest gear in the transmission.
  5. Know your vehicle’s Gross Vehicle weight (GVW) as well as the GVW of the rescue vehicle so you know if your equipment is appropriate. If your vehicle is heavier than the rescue vehicle, the rescue vehicle could loose traction and may need to be weighted down in some way.
  6. Use a shovel to dig out mud, snow or sand around the wheels and frame. Mud can be especially tricky as it can create suction around the wheels.
  7. Use traction boards under the drive wheels to assist.
  8. Always attach to a recovery rated point or the frame. Axles are NOT recovery points. Bumpers, unless specifically designed and bolted to the frame, are NOT recovery points.

Our Conclusion

Well this is a tough one when you haven’t actually used the product, but with RHINO USA’s reputation and the 4.8 star reviews on Amazon, I feel very confident that these two items will get us unstuck should we ever need them.

Of course we will also need another vehicle to use these items. Hopefully there are people out there paying it forward when and if it’s our turn to be rescued. Take a look at all their product to find the ones that fit your needs.
