The best of the porta potty models

Emergencies Happen

You just pulled into a small town and don’t have time to track down a public restroom.  You are having a bathroom emergency.   It might be a #1 or a #2, but at this point they both send that same message to your brain that says “oh crap, I’m in trouble”

Well, I’m here to tell you, I feel your pain. And that is one reason I will ALWAYS have a toilet in my van. I listen to van life podcasts all the time where they interview people who live full time in their vans.  I am amazed at how many people choose not to have a toilet.

Sure it takes a few extra steps to find a bathroom or porta potty to empty it in, but for me it’s worth it.  Hell I’m a nurse and if I can avoid dealing with another Code Brown, especially mine, I’ll do it! Ok, let’s get on with the review.

Size

Let’s start with it’s compact size. With the following dimensions (length 16.8”, width 15”, height 13”) It easily fits under a bench or a bed. We stow ours under one of the seating benches and can easily pull it out when it’s time to use it. The only thing you might want to consider is its height.

Comfort

As we have all experienced, not all toilet seats are a pleasure to sit on.  We both find this seat to be very comfortable.  We hope you have the same experience, as we are all shaped a little differently.

Capacity And Weight

4 gallons of fresh water for flushing. 3.2 gallons for waste water. With a dry weight of 8.2 lbs we choose to only fill the fresh water tank with 1-2 gallons of water to make it easier to move around

Flushing

The piston pump flush works surprisingly well.  While 1 flush is plenty for the yellow stuff, you might need 2-3 to get the TP and debris down.

Does It Smell?

We are very happy to report that we have never smelled the slightest porta-potty odor even when the waste tank was completely fullWe do add a toilet deodorizing liquid after each emptying.

Emptying

While there is a slight learning curve to separating the top from the waste tank and emptying it, but after one dump I considered myself an expert.  It has a great carrying handle for transporting into a bathroom or porta-potty for emptying.  It has an easy to read level indicator so you know when it’s time to empty it. Tip – always make sure the tank is held upright by the handle before pushing the pressure release button to avoid spillage.

Things To Consider

  • At 13” high you will need some leg strength and range of motion to get on and.  Personally we find it quite easy getting on and off. Try this model for a higher seat Thetford Porta Potty 365 Model 92820
  • When traveling up in altitude pressure can build up in any tightly sealed waste tank (this seal is what makes it not smell after use).  Make sure you pull the release handle so the pressure can equalize before you use it.  Don’t ask me how I know, but if you use it before equalizing the pressure, when you pull the release handle you might get sprayed.

Our Conclusion

We love this porta potty.  It’s functional, comfortable, economical and does the job.  We would definitely buy it again and recommend it to our van life friends
