Why Insulate Your Glass
We can insulate the walls, floors and ceilings of our vans all we want, but if we don’t insulate all the single pane windows, we are losing a ton of heat in the winter or letting the sun’s rays shine right in in the summer. So, what to do?
After I went through 20 bats of Havelock Wool insulating my van, it was pointed out to me that i desperately needed to insulate my windows. Windows are great for letting light into your van and letting you look out at the beautiful scenery, but they are not good insulators.
I started looking around to see what my options were. I quickly found that insulated window inserts were the way to go. What makes them an essential part of van life? Let’s take a look.
Features
- They fold up flat and store easily.
- They each have their own storage bag.
- They are easy to fit into your windows.
- They use strong rare earth magnets to secure firmly to the metal window frame
- They fit the windows contours like a glove.
- They block out light, heat and cold using automotive grade insulation.
- The outside of the panel is black for stealth camping.
- Fabric is made from 100% recycled PET plastic bottles.
- 100% satisfaction guarantee.
- Saves on heater fuel as your heater will run less often.
- Two interior colors. Charcoal Gray, which is what you see in the pictures, and Cool Gray.
Why VanEssentials?
The Fit
I can definitely vouch for how well they fit the windows. Once your press them into place and the magnets engage, your window is 100% sealed from the inside. There will be zero light getting in with these window covers. If you have a MaxxAir fan you can cover that too. The fan lets in morning light and cool and hot air as it is not insulated at all. The fan cover also cuts the wind noise to almost zero as you drive down the road.
Pros and Cons
The features section above covered a lot of the pros of this product, so I won’t repeat them here. Let me just say that this product along with the Havelock wool I used to insulate the walls, has been a game changer for our winter camping. This weekend we are taking a four day trip to Yosemite where the low temps are in the mid 20’s.
There is one potential con so let’s look at it.
- They do take up some space when they are not in the windows. Some fold up pretty small, but the front window and cab side window covers are fairly long when they are folded up. We keep ours in the pizza oven area or in the garage area. That is truly the only con I can think of.
Our Conclusion
Hands down this is one of our favorite products. They keep us warm in the winter, cool in the summer and sleeping soundly long after the sun has come up with their total blackout ability. You won’t go wrong with these window covers.
