Albion River Campground, Albion California

RIVERSIDE CAMPING WITH EASY OCEAN ACCESS

The Beautiful Drive

Whether you are coming from the north or the south, driving your van along the beautiful coastal Highway 1 is amazing. You get ocean views from sea level to a couple hundred feet above as you wind down the coastal two lane road. It is definitely worth the extra time it takes to get to your destination. While the driver is keeping their eyes on the road, the passenger will be treated to ocean views for much of the ride.

Rolling Into Albion River Campground & Marina

Located south of Mendocino in the town of Albion, and situated on the east side of the Albion River Bridge, it’s a short drive down a steep road to the campground. When you arrive, you will see the check in office and fences all around. This is a privately owned campground and a code is required to enter.

You will need to check in to get the automatic gate code. For late arrivals, call the office 707-937-0606 for your gate code if you are arriving after 5:30pm. Their website also state that if find yourself unable to get a campsite anywhere, that they will find a spot for you so you can have a place to stay for the night. As late as 10:00pm.

The Campground

When you drive in you will see a completely flat, treeless campground that looks more like a grass parking lot. There were not many rv’s or camper vans when we rolled through, but it is a huge area that must really be bustling in the summer. Since we were just taking a look at this campground on our way home from, West Pinewood Campground in Fort Bragg, we can’t give you any campsite specifics. Albion Campground map.

The River

Years ago I took a kayak up the Albion River. It was so beautiful and peaceful. There is so much wildlife on and in the river. In the water there are sea lions, elephant seals, harbor seals, otters. In the air you may find gulls, great blue herons, ospreys, geese, eagles, ducks, and king fishers. On the land, deer and mountain lions.

The Albion River is a tidal influenced river. The Albion website has more information on how that affects you boating and kayaking.

The Ocean

These waves are big and unforgiving along this part of the coast, so be careful. The water is very cold. Most of the coastline is very rocky, but there are some beautiful sandy beaches too. Enjoy it and respect its power. If you are ever in southern California check out Thornhill Broome beach front campground
