The Lakes RV Resort, Chowchilla California

When You Are Ready To Relax And Enjoy Some Nice Amenities

How Did We End Up Here?

Well it just so happens my dad has lived in Chowchilla since the early 1970’s. We were on our way up from southern California and made a stop to see him. The only issue was they were having a record breaking heatwave. It was 115 degrees when we arrived at 4 pm.

So, while we don’t tend to stay at RV resorts, we were happy to have power for our air conditioner and a pool. This was only the second time we used our roof top air conditioner. The first time was in our driveway for about 10 minutes. We are happy to say it worked great and we stayed cool the entire trip. Having a small fan in your van also helps to blow the cold air around and equalize the interior temperature.

You may or may not be old enough to remember the Chowchilla kidnapping on July 15th 1976, but that is kind of what put Chowchilla on the map. Kind of a strange way for a town to be recognized, but nobody was harmed and the kidnappers did their time.

Walking The RV Park

It was an interesting walk around this “campground”. I really struggle with calling it a campground. We are used to tall trees and dirt road with views of mountains and bodies of water. While this campground did have bodies of water, they were really just man made ponds / lakes.

You are basically in a walled off area in the middle of a housing development. How am I doing on selling this place lol. On two sides are roads. On one side you are next to a 7 foot stone wall that separates you from house’s backyards. The other side of the resort is an RV storage lot.

There are not a lot of trees, so if you want shade stick to the ones we suggest below.

Campsite Reviews

Well I have to be honest with you. It was 115 degrees and we didn’t spend too much time walking around this hot asphalt, no shade resort. Not to say it isn’t a nice place, but we didn’t tour the whole place.

With that said I can point out the spots we would prefer to stay in for shade and a view. Sites 59 through 68 get our vote for the best spots. As you can see on the map you have a nice view of the small pond and that area has a few trees that will keep you out of the sun.

Thoughts

If you are ever in the central valley and need a place to reset and stay cool, this might just be your best choice. We enjoyed it for a one night stay, but we need more wilderness to keep us occupied and stimulated.

If you want to see the extreme opposite of camping in an RV resort, check out our last boondocking site. If you ever find your self in extreme cold or hot locations, these insulated window covers are amazing at keeping your comfortable in your van.
