Beautiful Riverfront Camping in Big Sur

Exploring Campgrounds On Our Bikes

Another Big Sur campground tour by bicycle. We were staying at the Pfeiffer State Park Campground for a few days and decided to tour the three private campgrounds in the area. You can read our reviews on those campgrounds here. Big Sur Campground, Riverside Campground.

Last time I stayed here was about 15 years ago. The one thing I remember was the amazing swimming hole with a big rock to jump off of. Swimming and hiking filled our three day camping trip.

The campground in nestled down by the river and surrounded by big shading trees. It was perfect for the summer heat that area can get.

Types Of Campsites

While they have a wide variety of camping options from RV, tent, cabin and a motel, we focus our reviews around the class B RV crowd. Take a look at the map and plot out your spot. You can reserve up to a year in advance.

The swimming hole is right in front of campsites 11, 12 and 13. Sites 15 through 19 have shallower water for cooling off.

Our Campsite Pick

We liked sites 12 and 13 for their close proximity to the swim hole.
If anybody in your group has a tent and wants to escape a bit, site 00 is super secluded and away from everyone.

Local Things To See And Do

        • Preiffer Beach is 1/2 mile south and then down a 2 mile road, but no access for bikes, pedestrians or RV’s of any type unfortunately. We learned that the hard way after riding our bikes out there and being sent back.

        • The campground offers many hiking trails for all abilities. We suggest the Valley View or Pfeiffer Falls hike.

        • 1/2 mile north is the tiny town of Big Sur which has a few great restaurants. We had a great lunch at the Big Sur River Inn. In the summer they put chairs in the river and bring your food to you. Just next door they have a well-stocked store for anything you may need or have forgotten.
Pfeiffer State Park is just up the road and offers great hiking.

      Cell Service

          • ATT – 1 bar.

          • Verizon – 1 bar.

          • The Bar & Grill up on the road near the entrance has WiFi.

          • If you need additional WiFi options just head down to the Big Sur library. They are closed Sunday through Tuesday, but you can access their free WiFi from outside the building with no password.
